Reclining Men with Hat and Houses in Landscape | Liegende Herren mit Hut / Häuser und Landschaft
1921/25, Signed, Titled and Dated Double-sided Pencil Drawing on Wove Paper
Paper size: 35.5 x 50.5 cm. / 14 x 19.9 in.
Additional Information: This double-sided pencil drawing is hand signed by the artist “E. L. Kirchner” at the lower left corner.
It is also titled ad dated in red pencil “Liegende Herren mit Hut 1921” [Reclining men with hat 1921], verso.
The paper bears the estate stamp of the artist (Lugt 1570 b) in the lower left corner, verso and the ink numbering “FS Da/Bc 4”, as well as the pencil inscription “K 10277” above.
Note: According to Gerd Presler, the date 21 does not necessarily refer to the finalised drawing as we find it today, the style being more in keeping with around 1925. The figures on the recto are proposed to be a self-portrait of the artist and Erna Schilling and the setting is, therefore, mostly likely, to be Davos. Kirchner and Schilling knew one another from 1912, and the latter was a model and textile designer who worked with Kirchner.
