The paintings of Christof John, who lives and works in Cologne, are characterised by geometric elements juxtaposed with organically soft surfaces. Their structures, grids and patterns with a harsh alternation of colours are precise and blurred at the same time. The artist responds to the constantly changing and never-still view between close-up and distant, additions and extracts vision with a ‘never-ending picture’, as he himself describes his intention. His works are created in countless layers of oil, acrylic and pencil on MDF panels. The application and removal of colour is an essential part of the creation process. John's paintings are characterised by their openness and their processual character. If the viewer engages with them, an activation of the senses could be set in motion that opens new spaces, releasing emotions of pure joy and freedom.
