Ebi Kohlbacher and Lui Wienerroither founded the company in 1993 and W&K moved to the centre of Vienna in 1997. The high vaults of Palais Hardegg in Strauchgasse provided the perfect setting for the presentation of classical modernism. Modernism, with a focus on Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka and Alfred Kubin, as well as art from the interwar period were at the centre of interest from the very beginning. Over the past 30 years, W&K has established itself in the international art trade by participating in international art fairs and presenting important artists of classical modernism such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Emil Nolde, Lyonel Feininger and Pablo Picasso.
In 2013, W&K joined forces with the Shepherd Gallery in New York and has since realised joint exhibition projects on Alfred Wickenburg, Gustav Klimt, Lyonel Feininger and Paul Klee, among others. Three years later, the gallery was expanded to include another location in Vienna. The baroque premises of Palais Schönborn-Batthyány were added as a unique exhibition space in which W&K presents highly acclaimed exhibitions of contemporary and post-1945 art, including Günther Uecker, Heinz Mack, Max Weiler, Elke Silvia Krystufek and Günter Brus.
